What Makes a Great Whole House Fan

A good whole house fan should be quiet enough that you forget it's running, inexpensive to operate, and built to last decades. It should flush the hot air out of your attic, pull cool evening air through your home, and dramatically reduce or eliminate the need for air conditioning.

These fans work beautifully in every type of home, from simple single level ranches to open floor plan multi level designs. They're especially effective in homes with high ceilings or multiple stories where hot air concentrates in those hard to cool upper areas.

The right fan transforms your home from a summer hotbox into a comfortable, affordable retreat.

Three Things a Whole House Fan Does

🌬️

Creates a Breeze

Draws air from any open window or door directly to the fan, creating cooling airflow throughout your home.

🏠

Flushes Your Home

Pushes hot, stale air from inside your house up into the attic, replacing it with fresh outside air.

β˜€οΈ

Clears the Attic

Exhausts the extreme heat from your attic (often 120Β°F+) out through the roof, gable, or soffit vents.

What This Means for Your Home

By controlling the air in your home, you can:

  • βœ“ Feel comfortable on many days without any other cooling system
  • βœ“ Cut your air conditioning bill substantially and run it less often
  • βœ“ Finally cool that hot upstairs, or help your AC reach those upper levels quickly
  • βœ“ Reduce indoor air pollution and eliminate lingering odors
  • βœ“ Freshen the air anytime, in any season, by running the fan for just a few minutes
  • βœ“ Increase your home's value when you're ready to sell

About Attic Venting

For your fan to perform at its best, your attic needs enough ventilation to exhaust the air being pushed into it. Most homes need additional venting installed. Without adequate venting, your fan will still work, but it won't move air as efficiently and may run louder than necessary.

During our phone consultation, we'll help you determine if your home needs additional venting based on your attic's current setup. Learn more about why ventilation matters β†’

30 Inch Fan
Typically needs about 3 sq ft of additional venting, approximately 3 vents
36 Inch Fan
Typically needs about 5 sq ft of additional venting, approximately 5 vents
42 Inch Fan
Typically needs about 6 sq ft of additional venting, approximately 6 vents
Vent Installation
Standard composite shingle or wood shake roofs: $150 per vent

Special roof types: Concrete tile, metal roofs, slate, and other specialty roofing materials will have additional charges due to the specialized techniques required.

Some homes already have adequate venting and may not need additional work.
